Siberian Husky Club of America Health Statement
Approved by the Siberian Husky Club of America Board of Directors September 10, 2024
SHCA requires the following health testing to comply with our Guidelines for Ethical Breeding Practices:
• Eye examination yearly by a Board-Certified ACVO Ophthalmologist with a minimum age of 12 months with results registered with:
o Siberian Husky Ophthalmic Registry (SHOR)
o Companion Animal Eye Registry through OFA (CAER)
• Hip Dysplasia:
o OFA Evaluation – or
o OVC Evaluation – or o PennHIP Evaluation – or
o Equivalent recognized registry
• Siberian Husky Shaking Puppy Syndrome Type 1 (SPS1) - Stud dogs and brood bitches should be genetically tested using the University of Minnesota Canine Genetics Lab test for SPS1:
o Results registered with (OFA)
o Eliminating carrier dogs from breeding programs is NOT recommended as this will negatively impact the long-term genetic diversity of the breed. CARRIER dogs can be bred to CLEAR dogs. CARRIER dogs should not be bred to CARRIERS, as this has the potential to produce AFFECTED dogs.
• Siberian Husky Polyneuropathy Type 1 (SHPN1) - Stud dogs and brood bitches should be genetically tested using the University of Minnesota Canine Genetics Lab test for SHPN1:
o Results registered with (OFA)
o Eliminating carrier dogs from breeding programs is NOT recommended as this will negatively impact the long-term genetic diversity of the breed. CARRIER dogs can be bred to CLEAR dogs. CARRIER dogs should not be bred to CARRIERS, as this has the potential to produce AFFECTED dogs.
