 Dryland Working Certificate Program

The purpose of the Dryland Working Certificate program is to demonstrate the ability of the registered Siberian Husky in dog-powered sports competition, while recognizing that this may not necessarily take place with a sled on snow. The program is open to all purebred Siberian Huskies individually registered with the American Kennel Club.

Upon completion of the requirements below, the dog will be issued a Dryland Working (DW) certificate, and the owner may add the suffix “DW” to the dog’s registered name*. Each subsequent time the dog meets these same requirements, a new certificate will be issued with a numerical suffix indicating the new level of achievement: e.g., DW2, DW3. This will continue as long as the dog continues to meet the requirements, which reset after each certificate level is earned.

Rules and Eligibility:

  • The applicant must be a purebred Siberian Husky registered with the American Kennel Club. Dogs with Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) registration are eligible.

  • Spayed or neutered dogs are eligible.

  • The applicant dog may work as part of a mixed breed team.

  • All races must be held on dry land (e.g., dirt or gravel) using one of the following:

    • Bicycle

    • 2-wheeled scooter

    • Sulky

    • Wheeled rig

  • All races must be held under the direction of a recognized Race Giving Organization (RGO), with race rules and recorded results.

    • Examples of “recognized” RGOs include sled dog clubs, Siberian Husky clubs, or other organized dog clubs.

  • Race must be advertised prior to the event and results published after the event (on the RGO website or Facebook page, etc.).

  • The applicant dog must run the entire race in harness.

  • The applicant dog may run in no more than two classes per event.

  • Where subsequent heats of a race are canceled, qualifying mileage from completed heats may be counted towards a certificate.

  • Mileage for a certificate may be accumulated from season to season.

  • Mileage cannot be "rounded up" to the next whole number.

Requirements for Award of a Dryland Working Certificate:

A total accumulation of not less than 30 miles completed in dryland races as outlined above.

Application Requirements:

Each individual application for a degree must include:

  1. A copy of the dog's AKC (or PAL) registration papers

  2. A completed Dryland Certificate Program application from the SHCA

  3. Certified race results for applicant team signed by Race Marshal, Chief Judge, or Timer.

Printed race results which include date, finishing times & final placement.

Once a certificate has been approved by the Working Committee, the initials appropriate for the certificate (DW, DW2, DW3, etc.) may be used after the dog's name*. The dog's name will be listed in both the SHCA Newsletter and the SHCA Annual Directory in recognition. A certificate suitable for framing will be awarded.

*Note: The DW certificate is an SHCA award. It is not a recognized AKC title at this time.
